Marble has always been considered as a valuable material for use in homes and other building projects. It has been a sought-after material because of its beauty, strength, and resistance to fire and erosion. Ancient civilizations made good use of marble in their buildings, monuments, palaces, churches and statues. This durable stone is commonly utilized for flooring, countertops, backsplashes, and staircase steps and treads.

Basic Facts In Designing Staircases

Staircase steps consist of a sequence of risers and treads. Treads are the sloping part between intermittent steps and risers are the part your toe bumps. Treads and risers should be structurally sound, flat, dry, clean, and smooth. They may be an exterior or interior applications. When designing steps and staircases, it is important to ensure that the dimensions of treads and risers are regular. The steps should be uniform, as uneven staircase steps can generally make people trip up. In order to fashion uniform steps evenly, you need to divide up the total height of the stairs to determine the height of the riser. Stair treads are generally custom-fabricated from large stones such as marble, and risers are generally custom-fabricated but occasionally are simply cut from field tiles. The Use Of Marble For Stair Treads And Rises Is Increasing Due to its immense natural beauty, marble is used widely for making treads and risers in stairs. Some materials are called "unfading", which means that these flooring materials would be able to hold their basic color even after many years of exterior use. Others materials are "weathering" or "semi-weathering", which indicates that they will change color when used outside. A marble stones' weathering characteristic is primarily an aesthetic consideration. Artfully designed doors, stonework and pillars can add an air of elegance to homes. In making a unique and classical expression, some homeowners choose the classic design element of a grand staircase as a centerpiece in foyers. According to some home design experts, standard stairways for maybe an 8-foot high ceiling and probably with 14-foot risers, would cost anywhere between $5,000 and $15,000, and more homeowners are going to this high-end option. Experts observed that in many cases people are designing their own stairways to compliment their personal taste and preferences, saying "It's not just in how the stairway looks; it's how they're crafted as well".

Maintenance Tips For Marble Stairs

When marble tiles and materials are placed outside, is not meant to be shiny, it will not resist. In restoring a marble stair's gloss and shine, it is very possible and you will get a surprising result when done professionally. You can also do it yourself if you have the tools such as grinders. Sand down a marble tile with the roughest grit to remove old material quickly until you are left with a smooth even finish. then you move up in grit, one number at a time (for example 40, 60, 80, 100, 200, 400) until you get the finish you are looking for. With marble tiles, when you get to 400 -800, you will start to see the shine. After doing this, apply a penetrating sealer to the tiles. The best way to keep marble stairs clean and constantly shiny, is to incorporate removal of dirt, grit, and other materials that are brought in from outdoors. Most of these substances can cause very minute scratches on the surface of your marble, over time can become noticeable. It would be best to make sure that the surface of the marble is cleaned using a damp cloth, soft broom, or vacuum as regularly as possible. Cleaning up liquid spills immediately is a good practice, especially if these fluids are acidic in nature. Fruit juice, as well as coffee and red wine may cause permanent spots, since they have a tendency to stain. Even if you've sealed your marble, it's a good idea not to take any chances, and quickly clear spills right away. In addition, remember not to use bleach, vinegar, or any harsh acidic-based cleaners, as these solutions will will degrade the surface of your marble over time.

The primary concern of many homeowners is the best way to clean granite countertops. Looking closely, granite countertops have been popular piece of decoration in the kitchen because of its beauty so homeowners who invest on this surface material would like to know how to properly take care of them.

One of the things you have to keep in mind in cleaning these countertops is knowing the material type you have in your home. Remember that granite countertops come in the natural or composite type so you must know the appropriate material to use for cleaning. If you're not sure of what material is used, you can consult its manual or research online to know them.

After knowing the material, it's now time for you to clean granite countertops for proper maintenance. Maintenance of your countertop begins in cleaning them right after using. This means you have to wipe the surface immediately after being stained by food preparation. If you'll trace the source of tough stains, they are just simple stains but have deeply set on the countertop. The stains that you have to take care immediately are wine stains, liquor and even water marks caused by cold glasses.

Regular cleaning is also essential in keeping your countertops clean and shiny. This will keep other stains like hardened dirt from preventing its surface from being shiny. This type of cleaning doesn't need to be a daunting task. You just need to wipe them regularly as a way to clean granite countertops or use other materials to strip down tough stain.

Finally, you must check your countertop for stains that you cannot remove. This stain may have set on the main granite material. This means that the stain has already penetrated the sealant so you may not have a way to clean them. To clean granite countertops, you have to look for solutions that will remove these stains. After stripping the stain, you can get a sealant to protect the countertop. The sealant may already have a damage that allowed the stain to set deep on the main granite material.

Maintaining clean granite countertops is simple as long as you clean every stain immediately once they set on it. Doing these procedures will help you keep your countertop shiny and always look presentable for people who will visit your home. This will also maintain the aesthetic value of your invested property.

Granite counter tops are considered by many to be the best of the best. Offering great durability, natural beauty that is simply hard to beat and a usability level that meets or exceeds many other options, these counter tops are favored by many for good reasons. Still, granite counter tops will take some special care to maintain their beauty.

Granite counter tops are tough, very tough. Yet, they are not indestructible. With this in mind, there are a few basic tips in regard to safe use for these counters. They include:

  • Avoid dropping heavy items on them. Although granite is incredibly strong, it can be chipped and even broken, especially if a hit takes place on a fissure line. Try to use at least a little care when placing heavy objects on these counters and when lifting items over them.
  • Don't stand on them. Here and again, it is simply not a good idea to stand directly on the overhangs in particular. These can break and chip if weight is too much.
  • Do not cut directly on them. This is especially so if the granite has been treated with a sealer. While the cutting won't likely damage the granite itself, it can scratch the sealant and level behind a bit of streaking.
  • Avoid placing hot pots on them. While it is almost impossible to burn or melt granite counter tops, the sealer can be damaged when this is done. It is almost always recommended that hot pots and pans be placed on a trivet or hotplate instead.
  • Granite counter tops are known for their beauty and durability, but to keep them looking great, they must be cleaned. These counters require slightly different attention that others for routine cleaning. Here are some basic tips for keeping these counters looking great:
  • Wipe up daily. Use a soft rag and mild cleanser or stone soap on a daily basis to clean and wipe down the counters. This will just help keep surface dirt and dust away and keep the counters looking great. If heavy dirt or stains are present, clean them up right away. If the stain does make it into the granite, a special cleaner might be necessary to remove it.
  • Buff it up. Every so often these counters will need to be buffed out to remove any streaking that occurs. A regular old terry cloth towel works great for this purpose.
  • Polish. Stone polish designed for granite counter tops can also help keep things looking great and prevent any potential staining problems.
  • Seal it. These counters are normally sealed at the time of installation, but a reapplication should take place every few years. This will help protect the appearance of counters over the long haul. If a homeowner isn't comfortable with doing this, pros can be hired.

Granite counter tops are considered among the best for their natural beauty and lasting durability. Taking care of them correctly can extend the lifespan of their appearance for years into the future.

The stone is available in a variety of color variations such as whites, black, yellows, reds, creamy neutrals, subtle earth tones, greens, tawny browns, and even scarlet reds, and will be either clouded or veined. The colors of marble can be combined with different types of accents, borders and patterns to produce a dramatic effect to your master suite bath. While marble is very durable, most natural stone products are prone to cracking, so it's not a good idea to use marbles in bathrooms that have a lot of traffic or ones regularly used by children.      Cleaning marble bathrooms is surprisingly easy but it does require a regular routine to keep the stone looking rich. Some experts recommend using plain water, but most suggest gently wiping surfaces with a mild cleaning solution. This should be followed with a clear water rinse to avoid streaks or soapy build-up. Never use harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners or vinegar on a marble surface. Vinegar chemically reacts with the calcium carbonate in the stone, strips the shine, and permanently etches the surface. Marble bathrooms are a great home addition investment and you get great value for your money. It's beauty is timeless, the stone is very resilient, and it is surprisingly easy to maintain. MARBLE

The ancient Greeks and Romans both used marble expansively. The Greeks built many of their famous architectural masterpieces using Pentelic marble. They carved many of the most famous statues in history from other Greek marbles. When the Roman Empire rose it conquered the Greek quarries, as well as many other quarries in various countries and used marble in many of their architectural and artistic endeavors as well. Marble is a kind of limestone that has undergone a process which has made the structure of the rock more solid. This process allows the stone to take a high polish. This stone is generally formed when limestone is faced with extremes of pressure or temperature that cause it to undergo a process known as metamorphism. When Metamorphism occurs the structure of the limestone becomes crystal in nature, transforming into calcite or dolomite. These two substances are the main materials in marble. The crystal is a very strong molecular form and the result of this is a stronger, highly polish-able stone, with unique coloring characteristics often known as Marbling. The many colours of marble are induced when impurities get caught in the structure of the marble during formation. Impurities such as carbon, iron, and various oxides cause streaks and shapes to appear in the surface of the stone. There are an enormous variety of impurities that can become trapped in the marble. The result is that marble comes in a very wide range of colours. Further, the way the impurities become trapped form randomized shapes in the marble which ensure that any piece of the stone is one of a kind. It is this feature that inspired many artists to work with marble as a medium. It can be used in a variety of interior and exterior applications kitchens worktops, bathroom bench tops, bath surrounds, vanity tops, countertops, table tops, splash backs, up-stands, cupboard tops, bar tops, retail counter tops, restaurant counter and servery tops, hotel and reception foyer, staircases -treads and risers- and other surfaces .

QUARTZ

Engineered stone, also called Quartz Surfacing because it is made by combining 93 percent crushed natural quartz with resins and pigments, has been developed to create a material resembling natural stone but much harder, more durable, and easier to care for than any other countertop material. Engineered stone counters are available in an ever-growing number of colors, patterns, and even textures. They are becoming increasingly popular for high-end applications because they offer the benefits of granite's durability with the attributes of nonporous solid surfacing into one product. Engineered stone is usually polished to a high gloss shine and installed in solid slabs like granite, but the colors and patterns are more consistent. The combination of quartz and resins make it nonporous, resistant to heat, scratching, stains, chemicals, molds and bacteria with no need for sealing. It is harder and heavier than granite, and because it is more flexible, it is somewhat easier to handle and install. It will not chip or fracture during everyday use as granite can. The extremely hard, non-porous surface retains its high-polished luster and never needs sealing. It is easily cleaned with warm, pH neutral soapy water. Most patterns resemble natural stone, but with a consistent pattern and color, so that, unlike granite, your countertop will look very much like the sample you chose. It can be used in a variety of interior and exterior applications: kitchens worktops, bathroom bench tops, bath surrounds, vanity tops, countertops, table tops, splash-backs, up-stands, cupboard tops, bar tops, retail counter tops, restaurant counter and servery tops, hotel and reception foyer
